Changes Mild on 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan Crossover SUV
2012 Hot New Cars
Volkswagen finally released information and even images of its 2012 VW Tiguan crossover.
For the 2012 model year, the small crossover will obviously take on the fresh family face, which consists of the new, two-bar front grille and redesigned headlights. LEDs have been hot in the auto industry, so the SEL trim’s headlights incorporate available LED daytime running lights with Bi-Xenon HIDs and the advanced headlight system (AFS). The trapezoidal foglight housings and lower center design element are ever so slightly retouched, and Volkswagen is certain the changes bring a “sporty and attractive new look.”
Out back, “double L” taillights continue the lighting changes, and a chrome accent piece is now added to the SE and SEL models. To further distinguish the top-of-the-line SEL, 19-inch “Savannah” alloy wheels will now be paired with the sport-tuned suspension for an exaggerated appearance. Pepper Gray paint is also joining the palette.
Inside, the entry-level S trim will receive new cloth seating surfaces colored black. SE customers get V-Tex leatherette in black or beige, and the SEL fits leather. Bluetooth comes standard on all models, as does auxiliary audio ports, power and heated side mirrors. A Dynaudio 300-watt sound system is featured with the pricier Tiguans.
In the U.S., the new Tiguan will come with the same turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI inline-four engine, presumably with the identical 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet output figures. The engine is currently capable of delivering 20 city/25 highway mpg with front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission, but the 2012 model is supposedly ready to turn 29 highway mpg. EPA-certified numbers aren’t ready yet, but a 16-percent gain in highway fuel efficiency would certainly be eye-catching.
Current 2011 Tiguan fuel economies also include 18 city/26 highway mpg with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual, and 19 city/25 highway with 4Motion all-wheel drive and the six-speed auto. European customers are presented with seven engine choices, and the Tiguan’s greater popularity overseas means it makes the case for an optional 7-speed twin-clutch auto.
Full press release can be found below. Pricing will be announced at a later date and the 2012 Tiguan goes on sale this fall. We wouldn’t expect the starting price to stray far from the 2011 model’s $24,540 MSRP (includes $820 destination charge).
Flexible, Fast and Fun to Drive, Redesigned 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan, Incorporates Brand’s Design Identity
The Only German-Engineered Compact Sport Utility in its Class, Now Delivers Improved Fuel Economy
HERNDON, Va., March 1, 2011 — Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced details of the technically and visually enhanced Tiguan, which will make its world debut at the Geneva International Motor Show, March 3 – 13, 2011. The Tiguan’s European tuned suspension enables precise handling, while also providing a smooth and compliant ride. With significant improvements to fuel economy, upgrades to the interior and new color options, the 2012 Tiguan exterior now incorporates the Volkswagen family design.
With an anticipated on sale date during the fall of 2011, pricing information for the 2012 Tiguan will be released later this year.
The 2012 Tiguan design stands out more than ever, incorporating the horizontal Volkswagen brand face giving the 2012 Tiguan a modern and sleek look and feel. A redesigned grille featuring two horizontal chrome strips runs between the updated headlights to form a single unit. Striking LED daytime running lights will be available in combination with Bi-XenonTM headlights with AFS (advanced headlight system) on SEL models. Trapezoidal lower air intakes containing the fog light housings, separated by a new center design element, give the 2012 Tiguan a sporty and attractive new look.
A chrome accent along the lower body of the Tiguan will be added to SE and SEL trims, for a sleek and polished look. The taillights for the Tiguan have been redesigned as well. The new and modern tail light design exhibits cues similar to all new VW models—drawing the eye to a striking “double L” pattern.
The 2012 Tiguan will offer a factory-installed19” wheel option, for the first time. The R GmbH developed “Savannah” alloy wheel and a sport-tuned suspension will be standard on SEL trim level, with the result being a Tiguan SEL with a premium look, and a sporty driving experience.
Pepper Gray will replace Alpine Gray for the 2012 model year, while Night Blue, first offered in 2011, will add depth and color to the palette.
All three Tiguan trims will feature interior enhancements. The Tiguan S will offer new high quality cloth seating surfaces in black. The Tiguan SE features Volkswagen’s V-Tex leatherette, available in black or beige. Customers interested in the Tiguan SEL will be able to choose from leather seating surfaces with driver memory seat in either black or beige.
The fun to drive Tiguan comes with the award winning 2.0-liter TSI® engine that delivers turbocharged acceleration and responsible fuel efficiency. While EPA figures are not yet available, the 2012 Tiguan is expected to deliver noteworthy highway fuel economy improvements from 25 miles per gallon highway to an estimated 29 miles per gallon highway.
All 2012 Tiguan models will feature standard Bluetooth connectivity, aux-in, power-adjustable heated side view mirrors and six airbags-- helping keep drivers safe while also connected on the road. The 2012 Tiguan comes standard with an eight speaker radio system, and Volkswagen’s touch-screen Premium VIII radio will be available on the SE trim level. Also available are two color touch-screen navigation systems, the RNS 315 or the RNS 510 system with a rear-view camera. Top trim levels will feature a Dynaudio® 300 watt sound system.
